Pre, mid and post marketing campaign surveys as a simple and cost efficient way to gather feedback from customers to make your message even more appealing, but they still need a reason to respond.

You can conduct tests, give out coupons or incentives offers works wonders to get a reply. You can then cluster responses and analyzing the details to h alp you find the super users who can and are willing to provide you with additional insight into the core elements to your campaign.

Then after all that work don’t forget to optimize your data on-line. And put in time tracking analytics to gain even more information

These steps will help you work your campaign to get better results as you massage it for your target audience on the fly.

Larson Note: It is all about connection. Know what you want when you start your campaign and then iron out the small detains as you go. Eash time narrowing in on the bulls eye.

Is Social Media Cost Effective?

Social Media can be a great way to maximize money and find low cost ways to market your business. But think it though form start to finish as best you can. There are dollar costs as well as time costs. Lake any marketing program you put in place it has to offer a real value to your bottom line and give a positive experience to your target audience.

You need to be realistic in your SM attack and pick one tool at a time, learn it, use it and then add in a second tool. If you are not carful you can easily engulf yourself into a whirl wind of SM turmoil and not achieve anything even close to ROI let alone new customers for your business.

Larson Note: At his stage in its history Social Media is capitalism at its purest form on earth. As you sow so shall you reap. It’s small, quick and very communicative. Mess up and spam your followers and fellow SW’ers and you will get a reputation. You will get booted out and sent to the spam box. Or worse yet your communications will be instantly deleted or you will be put on ignore.

4 Marketing Do’s and Do Not’s

1. Do tailor your message to fit the recipients you are targeting. Recycling a mailing piece originally intended for one segment, say men and try to portion it at woman will just not do it. It is better to not advertising at all then to get lazy and send out the wrong message

2. Don’t just talk about equality. Your company and brad will win more loyalty in the market if your company is known for supporting its employees. Human rights issues do make a difference.

3. Do remain sensitive to potentially offensive phrases. People use sexual preference and sexual orientation interchangeably. If you are in the gay and lesbian community you would look at it as something that we are not something that we chose. The same is true for race, creed and religion.

4. Don’t be afraid of being complex. Consumers have gotten much more sophisticated and expect a deeper greater depth and breathe in the advertising content we put before them. We all want to be thought of as multi demential not one-demential. We are not a man or woman, white, black Hispanic, Christian, Muslim, Baha’i but all of these things on combination.

Larson Note: Diverse Segment Marketing. Get use to the term because it is going to be a very common in marketing circles soon enough You need to look at the whole package, all the channels you can push into every one given market. Mail, phone, email, ads, Social Marketing, twitter, facebook, MySpace, nings, Merchants Circle. They are like building blocks, setting one up upon the other to make your house. And the foundation of your house? Your company’s consistency.

Fix Your Mind, Fix the Economy

Times are tough, or are they?

Tightening of credit, loss of jobs or of fear of loss has brought manufacturing to a screeching halt. Durable goods have few orders coming in, which translates to the steel industry to have fewer or small orders which puts less need on iron producers etc. etc. etc.

So while this is all common knowledge it was a real eye opener to see some of the back numbers that are out there.

IN CFO magazine in a survey 81% of US and 85% of European and Asian respondents were pessimist about how the economy would perform in 2009

A durable goods report for Prevel Consulting noted that the auto industry’s current capacity utilization rate at 25% is a historic low.

So what is good?

In this same Prevel Consulting report it was stated that the housing industry has sold off nearly its entire excess inventory. Good news because that will stabilize the housing marketing prices and these buyers are being given mortgages with higher standards than before.
Staying on housing the US Commerce Department reported that privately owned housing starts were 22% higher in February than they had been in January, and in addition building permits were up 3%.

Put that together with low inventory levels and I can only see a rise in production. It has to. I’m thinking we will have bottomed out in June, others say August. Either way the end of this mess will come.

Larson Note: June, August, October it is not a matter of if, it is when. If you put it in your head to get yourself and your business up and moving now not only will you be ahead of the curve, but you will shorten the recession for if not the world or nation but at least for yourself. We all have a micro-business economy in which we work in. We might be pushed and prodded buy the outside world but it does not have to put restrains or controls on our mind set to make things work.

The 5 P’s for a Powerful 1st Presentation

Generating new business is a long hard painful process even when times are good.

1. Prioritize: The more calls you make the less attention each call receives. Use the 20/80 rule and invest in more in your income producers.

2. Prepare: You must come to the inni8tail meeting ready to suggest possible reasons the two of you should be talking. You goal however is to more to an inquiry about the clients perception, feelings and needs

3. Personalize: Salespeople need to build a system for getting referrals. The odds of a sucesful meeting do up with a referral.

4. Practice: Don’t just walk into a meeting. If you want to be a pro act and present like a pro. Write out your presentation. Yes write out a scrip to you know where you want to go with it.

5. Pre-Position: The best salespeople get an agreement with the client on the objectives to the meeting but before it starts. They request information in advance that can help maximize the time and effort to outline the steps that are needed to more to the next stage.

Larson Note: When you have an appointment be ready, work out plan as to how you want the appointment to unfold. It can get very hard to balance out the need to work your current customers and go out looking for more. Find a balance (or heir us) to keep your sales pipeline full.

Monday:
Tuesday: April housing starts
Wednesday:

Larson note: Slow week report wise. More retail earnings reports coming out this week. Expect the same kind of things you saw last week. Despite the good reports we say last week, ones that were as good if not better than expectations the stock market moved down. Consumer prices were flat, manufacturing contracted LESS than expected, yes the Wall Street pro’s did not like it. Go figure.

Act Now For Tomorrow’s Recovery

Like in the movies things always seem their darkest just before the light at the end of the tunnel. The recovery will happen. We all know it will. It is only a matter of when.

Now as most of you know every Monday I post the reposts coming out for the week. These are posted for you to benchmark what is going on out there, but most important of all those are, New orders for nondefense capital goods, the inventory to order ratio, corporate bond prices the Purchasing Managers index, the Conference Board’s U.S. Leading Indicators and of course the good old Stock Market, but between you and I, I sometimes wonder about the stock market.

Meanwhile you need to start preparing yourself for the coming upswing.

Here is the Larson short list of things to do:
1. Prepare and train your front line people.
2. Negotiate any labor contract you might have (if you have any).
3. Develop your advertising and marketing programs now.
4. Enter or re-negotiate any long-term leases.
5. Look for additional vendors.
6. Consider capital expenditures in light of market potential.
7. Use pessimism to your advantage when making any acquisitions.
8. Lead with optimism and a can-do attitude to get people past their fears.
Larson note: There are always opportunities in any economic cycle. If you’re watching you can recognize them early and act quickly. So be a Boy Scout and “Be Prepared”.

Direct Mail Formats long or short copy?

The trend today seems to be on short copy. Tri-fold self mailers, postcards, oversized postcards, one page sales letters with a simple business reply card work very well in a b2b direct mail attack for any lead generation program. Get in and in a few word make your point.

Larson note: I am a long copy kind of guy who believes more in the headline than the length of copy. Draw them in and then make a convincing message. But both can and do work.

5 Tips To Better Managing

According to a recent Gallup poll, 70% of employees don’t really care about the company they work for and with. The largest single problem is the relationship they have with their front line manager.

I started my company back in 1975. Fresh out of school. Great ideas, plenty of energy, but no idea on how to engage people. To empower people to be the best “them” they can and could be.

I did the usual things like taking classes on management and supervision but it was not till I became aware of and joined Sales Professionals Int. (free plug here) that I was introduced to the likes of Nick Carter, Hank Trisler, Brain Tracy, Tony Robbins, and others that it all started to come together for me.

1. Speak and life your vision. Be who you say you are.
2. Listen to everyone. Yes everyone. You might be surprised at how smart people can be if given a chance to speak and be heard.
3. Make sound requests. Busy work is just that. Make requests that have a meaningful consequence to your business.
4. Become a master at diagnosing and problem solving. You can’t sit back and wait for last months statistics to make decisions. That is middle managements job. Yours is to know you, your business, your people and run! Am I talking instinct here? Street smarts? Yes. Only your banker wants to see the numbers.
5. Holding everyone (including yourself) accountable for producing results. If everyone is empowered to do their job, they can be held accountable to see it is done.
Larson note: What is the biggest challenge your company is facing. Are you part of your vision? Are your eyes and ears all open, and working? Has someone been empowered to do it? In the end your numbers will be up, you will sleep at night and have time to enjoy the fruits of your labors.

More Leads with no budget

How can you find and generate more leads when your budget is running on empty?

Look in your data bank and warm up those seemingly cold leads. Maybe you were just a little too quick to put them out to pasture. Maybe there is gold in those names. Quite often these are prospects that were not quite ready to buy. The timing was not right for them, and it is there timing that is important not your need to make another sales for the month.

Reach out, call them, email them, send them a card. Just get your name in front of their face.

Another prime spot for leads is that chamber you have been paying dues to these last few months or years. It’s time to get the payback. Start calling those people you have been sitting with at the monthly lunch. Join one of the associations committees that allows you to use your or talk to members about them and yourself. (Do I hear membership committee?)

Can you talk? There are hundreds of “clubs” that have hungry program directors begging for a speaker. Talk about your business or industry and a reoccurring problem hand how to solve it. NO hard sell but make it clear that you can offer help to these kinds of problems. I sure do when I talk.

If you blog and you have a good one, email a copy to current clients and prospects. Once again you are showing off your knowledge and ways that you can help them in their business.

Larson note: Take away their pain. Show them the road to the cure to what their problems are and how you can help elevate their pain. People always more form pain to pleasure. Don’t you?

The Week Ahead for May 4 – May 8, 2009

Monday: March construction spending
Tuesday: April institute for Supple Management services index
Wednesday:
Thursday: Weekly initial jobless claims, 1st quarter productivity, March consumer credit
Friday: April employment report, March wholesale inventories

Larson note: More ups and does for the reports but we are going to see more ups than downs. When you look at the productivity numbers, keep in mind that inventory reduction is an excellent way for companies to reduce costs. Idle inventory is a cost. Don’t believe me just ask GM) and with overall inventories down it can mean only one thing, time to get those machines and people back to work. Now I ask you, have you positioned yourself to get your (more than) fair share? The big start is in my opinion not going to happen until June but start pumping up your sales force, get your marketing plan out of mothballs and get it updated if you haven’t already.

I took my own advice and, finally after a 3 month search took on a sales manager for the Heartland States of America. Mr. Rogier Chapon of Wichita Kansas, a Six Sigma black belt. You can contact him at rogier@larsonassociates.ws or call him at 316-773-5719 By June he will be starting to hammer home in our summer expansion, as we put even more people to work.
